Impact Report - Year ended 31 March 2026

Scroll

Kia ora,

Welcome to Biome Trust Aotearoa’s first annual impact report, highlighting the work we supported during the year ended 31 March 2026, and our learning along the way.

We acknowledge the mana of the mountains, rivers, oceans, forests, creatures, and people of Aotearoa New Zealand, and our shared responsibility to support a healthy and flourishing world. In particular, we acknowledge te awa Mangaroa, the Remutaka Range, and ngā mana whenua, Te Āti Awa whānau whānui ki te Upoko o te Ika, as ancestral guardians of the whenua we call home.

This year, our giving grew, with more than 80% directed towards environmental purposes. We also invested in relationships and shared learning through initiatives including Earth Fellows, which supports and connects regenerative leaders, and the Education Hui, which brought education leaders together to share perspectives and explore opportunities for change.

Through our wholly owned subsidiary, Mangaroa Farms, we continued to steward a 1,222-hectare charitable farm and living laboratory, providing a place to explore and practise approaches to land stewardship, regeneration, and learning.

Ma Earth also reached an important milestone during the year, becoming an independent charitable foundation based in Switzerland. Building on more than a decade of experience in grantmaking and land stewardship, it has continued to develop beyond Biome Trust. After the reporting period, it ran its third funding round — the first on its own platform — supporting nearly ten times the value of the previous round.

We feel fortunate to be on this journey alongside so many remarkable people. We especially want to acknowledge the people and organisations whose work we support. We deeply value our partnerships and are continually inspired by the care and commitment you bring to your work.

Ngā mihi aroha,
— Biome Trust

How we work

Our Approach

Three charitable purposes

Te Tauihu Environment Trust

Environment

Healthy land and waterways, biodiversity, regenerative food systems and thriving communities.

The Gift Trust

Education

Knowledge and practical skills through research, new ideas, hands-on learning and different ways of seeing the world.

Kawakawa

Health

Healthier communities through stronger connections between people, food, nature and culture, and places that help people thrive.

Three ways we create impact

01

Give

to partners doing great work

02

Develop

initiatives we help create and lead

03

Invest

our endowment to advance our mission

Five principles that guide our giving

01

Back capable leadership

We back capable leaders and give them room to lead.

02

Trust people close to the work

We favour long-term relationships built on trust.

03

Be willing to take risks

We back promising ideas early, including those that do not fit neatly into conventional categories.

04

Keep learning together

We improve how we give by listening, learning and adapting alongside the people we support.

05

Value place and depth of impact

We often support work grounded in a particular place, prioritising lasting change as much as broad reach.

Ma Earth

Ma Earth grew out of a decade of experience in philanthropy and a persistent challenge: major funders and high-quality grassroots nature projects often struggled to find each other.

The platform provides the infrastructure to bridge that gap: funders support vetted projects without one-to-one relationships, philanthropic matching amplifies crowdfunding, and projects retain control of their data.

Built and launched this year, the platform hosted Ma Earth’s third funding round — the first run on the new platform — in July 2026.

FY2026 highlights

The largest campaign of its kind

Round 3 drew 11,700+ crowdfunding participants worldwide.

How it works

People crowdfund projects they value; a matching pool gives more to projects backed by more people.

Aotearoa New Zealand

Punching above its weight

26 New Zealand projects received more than 315K USD (536K NZD) — the highest concentration of funded projects of any country on the platform.

Stewarding
our endowment

We are transitioning our endowment from traditional investments into impact and values-aligned investing.

What We Steward

~$35M NZD

Biome Trust Aotearoa endowment — primarily NZ bonds, with a small and growing share in equities and impact funds

~$70M NZD

Consolidated balance sheet for Biome Trust and Mangaroa Farms, including the estimated value of land assets

Four pathways for creating impact

Capital

Extend our capital’s impact

By using approaches that can preserve, return or grow capital, we can redeploy resources and support more impact over time.

Mangaroa Farms

Support Mangaroa Farms

A cornerstone initiative wholly owned by Biome Trust. Its activities contribute directly to our impact, and the capital invested forms a significant asset on our consolidated balance sheet.

Impact funds

Invest in impact-focused funds

We invest in a range of mission-aligned funds, including Mad Capital, Alder Point, Superorganism and Burnt Island Ventures.

Environmental markets

Support environmental markets

We are actively looking for ways to use environmental instruments to advance our ecological goals.

Observations

Liquidity vs deeper mission alignment

As Biome Trust continues giving away its endowment capital, we prioritise liquidity and lower risk to preserve flexibility. This limits how much we can allocate to highly mission-aligned investments that lock up capital for long periods.

Learn before scaling private investment

Private funds can run for 10–12 years, with outcomes often taking 5–10 years to assess. This slow feedback cycle makes it challenging to move quickly and confidently.

Rooted in Aotearoa, connected globally

Our work and investments are primarily focused in Aotearoa New Zealand, while we also connect with international efforts addressing challenges that extend beyond borders.

A connected endowment

Biome Trust connects internationally through a network of philanthropic partners. Together, they provide investment, grantmaking and geographic capabilities beyond what any single fund holder could offer, giving us greater flexibility in how we steward and deploy capital.
